Gauld becomes Scotland’s 6th youngest ever player to receive a Scotland call up
Today Gordon Strachan announced his 28 man squad for the upcoming European qualifier against Georgia and perhaps treated us to a glimpse of the future.
The qualifier at Ibrox will see Scotland look to continue the momentum they have under Gordon Strachan. Along with international regulars like Scott Brown and Alan McGregor, this time Strachan has called up the uncapped yet highly thought of Stevie May of Sheffield Wednesday and Sporting Lisbon’s youngster Ryan Gauld.
Midfielder Gauld moved to Sporting Lisbon for £3m, with Sporting Lisbon hoping to mould him into the quality player that he could possibly be given the opportunity to be coached and developed by the same coaches that created nurtured Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Figo.
With Gauld’s somewhat surprising call-up the summer becomes Scotland’s sixth youngest player to ever receive a Scotland call up, overtaking Scotland legend Dennis Law who made his debut aged 18 years old and 236 days old back in 1958.
Despite training with the Portugese clubs first team, so far Gauld is yet to make an appearance for the Sporting Lisbon first team. Although Gauld has been playing in competitive match situations with Sporting’s B team scoring and assisting one goal.
Many have criticised Gauld’s decision to move to Portugual and questioned if he was struggling and therefore “demoted” into the B team. However, they 5’6 midfielder has admitted that “settling in and playing in the B team for a few months was always the plan”.
The Aberdeenshire born, attacking midfielder was recently included in Sporting Lisbon’s Champions League squad against Schalke, Maribor and English giants Chelsea.
Although unlikely to make an appearance in the Georgia match, this call up will be a great experience for Gauld. It is a brilliant move from Strachan to include a player who (if all goes to plan) will be an extremely important player for his club and country in a few years time.
