Tottenham Hotspurs
Despite Tim Sherwood last season guiding spurs to a fairly strong league position in terms of their budget, the outspoken English man was unable to keep his job. Up next in the Tottenham hot seat is 42 year old Argentine Mauricio Pochettino.
Most important signing
Unlike last summer’s transfer window Spurs haven’t bought practically a new batch of players. This season Tottenham have only bought three new players, relatively unknown to the average football fan. However, the capture of Sevilla’s centre back Federico Fazio is a very clever signing indeed. Fazio should add quality depth to a paper thin list of centre halves at Whiteheart land. Fazio is an extremely physical defender with a decent range of passing as well.
In a Sevilla game against Athletico Madrid last season, the £32 million pound striker Diego Costa made it obvious that he was struggling to cope with the physicality of Fazio, as will many Premier League strikers if they attempt to outmuscle the 6 foot 5 Argentinean international.
Other signings
Pochettino has also snapped up the Swansea duo Michel Vorm and Ben Davies. Vorm who had spent four years with the Welsh side comes to Whiteheart lane looking most likely to play second fiddle to the French international Hugo Lloris. Although having quality keepers breathing down Lloris’s neck should put pressure of the Frenchman to perform consistently. Also signed from Swansea is 21 year old Ben Davies. Davies comes to London with the reputation of being a very promising attacking left back with a deadly delivery.
Key player
If Christian Eriksen can continue with his all action displays from the closing months of last season, he will prove to be a very important player for Spurs. Eriksen delivers a deadly ball from set pieces and continuously causes defences problems with his darting runs from midfield.
Areas to be strengthened
This season’s Spurs team lack real pace in midfield other than Aaron Lennon. With Lennon’s injuries becoming more frequent it would’ve been a clever move for Pochettino to sign a pacey midfielder to come off the bench late in games and cause trouble.
Where they’ll finish
With less new signings this season Spurs will be hoping to jell pretty quickly and adjust to Pochettino’s slick passing and moving brand of football. A good season could see Spurs potentially finishing around 7th, however, around 9th is a more accurate guess.
