Aston Villa transfer activity
So far this summer, Aston Villa have lured some decent players into their squad. They have not done their usual signing untested players from the Championship; they have signed experienced players who have performed at the highest level for years. Paul Lambert’s signing’s have shown that Villa are looking to be much more consistent and experienced side, and for clubs to not just think they are in for an easy afternoon.
Noted Transfers
So far Villa have signed Kieran Richardson from Fulham after he was released by the London club after two years. The two season deal sees him linking up again with Villa assistant coach Roy Keane, the manager who made Richardson Sunderland Athletic’s record signing in 2007. Richardson will provide a healthy work rate and direct attacking play when operating on his favoured left flank. He can play at left wing or left back and has even featured for clubs in centre midfield.
Another signing is former England midfielder Joe Cole. Cole was recently released by West Ham. The thirty-two year old can play anywhere across the midfield and like Richardson possess great experience and versatility.
All of West Ham’s signing’s this summer have had a similar theme and Phillipe Senderos is no different. Like Richardson and Cole Senderos also was told to leave his Spanish club Valencia after his contract expired and the club no longer needed his service. Senderos is a physical centre back and very good in the air; however, he lacks pace and struggles with his positioning when attackers are running at him. I think Senderos and Ron Vlaar will create a solid defensive partnership for Villa. Small sides will struggle to play Villa in set-pieces.
Rumoured transfers
Lately, sources have suggested that Villa have been strongly linked with the Argentinian legend Esteban Cambiasso. Cambiasso would provide much steal in the lightweight Villa midfield. Cambiasso isn’t just all brawn and no brain; he is brilliant at reading the game and breaking up play. Fellow premier league club West Ham are also reportedly in talks with the hardworking midfielder’s agent.
Players they could do with
Since Ashley Young left in 2011, I feel the Villains have struggled to find any creative and direct wide attackers. A lot of Villa’s play is very central and very rarely do we see a claret and blue winger persistently causing trouble for the opposing full backs. I believe that Watford’s Ikechi Anya would be perfect in Villa’s system. He has the pace, trickery and defensive work rate for Aston Villa to have a player that other teams dread to face. When Anya played against Croatia for Scotland he was awarded man of the match and created both goals for Scotland to record a famous win against the Croatians.
Other than the player that I suggested, I feel that Paul Lambert and Roy Keane have improved a lot of Villa’s weak areas. I feel that Villa should target a top twelve finish in the league
