Chelsea transfer activity
At times last season, Jose Mourinho questioned Chelsea’s lack of attacking fire power. Between Fernando Torres and Demba Ba only ten goals were scored, four behind top goal scoring midfielder Eden Hazard. Mourinho admitted that this current Chelsea team are in need of a shake-up and he has with the likes of Lampard, Cole and David Luiz leaving the club.
Noted transfers
On the first of July, Chelsea announced their first signing of the 2014-15 season. It was champion’s league runner up Athletico Madrid’s aggressive striker Diego Costa. Costa was signed after the blues met Athletico’s staggering £32million buy-out clause.
At the end of last season most Chelsea fans would have agreed that Costa will bring that ruthlessness and aggression up front that Chelsea have so long missed since the departure of Didier Drogba. However, after Costa’s poor performances in Spain’s awful world cup campaign, some Chelsea fans do not believe he is the striker to take them forward.
Chelsea also snapped up former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas on a five year deal from Barcelona. The Spanish giants received £30million for Fabregas, after the midfielder struggled to nail down a consistent starting eleven place at the Nou Camp.
Mourinho has also signed the highly rated 17 year old midfielder Jose Quintero. The attacking midfielder was believed to have been offered his first professional contract from Barcelona, however, he choose to go to the blues instead.
Chelsea after six months of discussion finally signed 19 year old Mario Pasalic from Croatian club Hajduk Split. The composed midfielder mentioned his admiration for former Chelsea legend Frank Lampard . Pasalic commented how he would like to emulate a similar success with Chelsea as the goal scoring midfielder had over thirteen years.
Transfer rumours
Chelsea are in pole position for the signing of Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira for a reported £24 million pounds. Arsenal looked set to sign Khedira until talks broke down after the German asked for £150k a week, which would make the world cup winner, one of three highest earner at the Emirates.
Throughout twitter this week there have been thousands of reported sightings of Juventus’s Paul Pogba around the Stamford Bridge area. Although there have been several photo’s, Pogba has suggested that there is no interest on either sides of a transfer.
Players they could do with
In my opinion I don’t rate Costa very much, I think Chelsea would be better of signing somebody like France’s Karim Benzema or even a suggested return for Chelsea legend Didier Drogba. Costa isn’t particularly talented on the ball, isn’t an intelligent player or have a brilliant work rate. Seemingly all he can do is kick the ball in the net and header the ball very hard with his elbows in somebodies face. This is good for certain team’s style of play like the Stoke style of 2011, admittedly he’s better than Peter Crouch and Cameron Jerome. However, I don’t believe he fits into the brand of football that Jose Morinho is trying to bring into this Chelsea team. I feel that Chelsea could do with a striker who can link up play and come deep and be dangerous with the ball. As suggested a Benzema type player, physical but still dangerous with the ball at his feet.
This is just my opinion! Chelsea fans or any fans feel free to comment on who you think Chelsea should sign?
