David Wotherspoon
David Wotherspoon described it as a dream come true to sign for his boyhood club St Johnstone. The versatile player who could occasionally change matches with a moment of flair spent 7 years in total at Easter Road, in which Hibee fans would often be left frustrated when he drifted out of many significant matches.
The midfielder was brought up in the Perthshire town Bridge Of Earn and signed for Glasgow Celtic's youth team aged 14 despite interest from various Scottish Premiership clubs.
Aged just 17 Wotherspoon made the bold decision to leave Scotland's biggest club and move East to Edinburgh club Hibernian, he believed this move would give him a better chance to break into the first team squad. The 5'11 midfielder was part of the Hibernian youth side that won the Scottish Youth cup in 2009 beating Rangers 2-1 at Hampden. Wotherpoon in that season scored 8 goals from midfield, a record his idol Frank Lampard would be proud of.
In the 2009-10 season Wotherspoon broke into Hibernian's first team, playing in a relatively unfamiliar role as a right back. The Perthshire born youngster scored against St Mirren in his first senior start at Easter road. Throughout the season impressing many Hibees with his all action displays on the right flank.
In the following season, the converted right back switched to a more familiar position as a right midfielder, occasionally featuring on Sky Sports Soccer AM Showboat when on numerous occasions found skinning defenders at will. In early 2011 he scored against St Mirren and future employers St Johnstone, he was a vital cog in their 6 match unbeaten run that helped them reach the Europa league Qualifiers.
In the early 2012-13 campaign Wotherspoon began impressing Hibernian fans and a number of Scottish football pundits playing as an attacking central midfielder, the position Pat Fenlon felt Wotherspoon contributed to matches positively. As the season went on Hibs began to loose consecutive games and frustrated Wotherspoon found himself out of favour with the coaching staff. The manager Fenlon not only lost many matches but also lost the dressing room and trust of senior players. When the season ended Wotherspoon's contract was up and left Leith with mixed feelings.
In the summer of 2013 Wotherspoon joined St Johnstone FC and with a extended run in the first team his performances and body language immediately improved. When given the ball he now looks to beat opponents with trickery and occasionally cut inside using his impressive close control to glide past defenders. So far this season he has only scored once, however he has been influential to St Johnston's impressive league campaign and Scottish Cup run. On the 17th of May the Saints will play Tayside rivals Dundee United in a showpiece final at Celtic Park.
