Everton transfer activity
At the start of last season, many thought that Everton would struggle under Roberto Matinez after long term manager left the club for the reigning Premier league champions Manchester United. However, in his first year in charge of the toffees he guided Everton to fifth place in the league. Everton were no longer the overachievers that David Moyes often described them as. Everton were striving for big things under the assertive Spaniard.
Noted transfers
Everton’s only transfer so far this summer is former England midfielder Gareth Barry. Barry returns to Goodison park after a successful loan spell with the Toffees last season. Barry is a predominately defensive midfielder, however, unlike a lot of these types of industrious players Barry is also very consistent with the ball at his feet. He will once again provide extra safety for the back four. Last season
, Barry created a formidable partnership with James McCarthy and they will be hoping to replicate the same success in this season’s Europa League.
Rumoured transfers
Various reports have suggested that Everton are chasing Bosnia and Herzegovinia’s twenty-two year old midfielder Muhamed Besic from Ferencvarosi TC in Budapest. Several clubs throughout Europe have marked their interest in the midfielder after the club revealing he has a £2million buy-out clause. However, the clubs that bids the heighest will most likely be awarded with Besic’s signature. Everton have supposedly offered in the region of four million for Besic, with Sevilla leading the way with five million.
Martinez has also declared his interest in bringing back Monaco’s Lacina Traore. Despite Traore making only a total of 62 minutes for the Toffees, Martinez was very impressed by his professionalism and desire to improve as a player. The six foot eight, Ivory Coast born striker has not made an appearance for Monaco since his signing in January of this year.
Players they could do with
With Romelu Lukaku gone back to his parent club Chelsea, where he is not overly favoured by the gutsy manager Mourinho. I believe Everton should search for a decent striker who can consistently put the ball in the net over a season. Everton could either go for the safe option and sign Lukaku and hope his form from late 2013 returns or they could go for a risky signing in Jordan Rhodes. Rhodes is somebody untested yet clinical for all the clubs and leagues he has played in. In the past six season’s Rhodes has featured in three-hundred and thirteen games for Huddersfield and Blackburn and scoring one-hundred and twenty-four goals, most of the goals in the space of his two seasons with Blackburn in the championship.
I doubt that Everton would take such a big risk in signing Rhodes so even somebody like Swansea’s Wilfried Bony, even though he hasn’t performed for a full season as of yet. I believe he could be a success at Goodison park.
