Tonight, former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has announced that he will be playing for Turkish second division club Gaziantep Buyuksehir Belediyespor for the 2014-15 season.
The 32 year old became a free agent after being released by the Magpies at the end of May. During his 14 years at St James’s park the six foot three Nigerian had made 397 appearances and scoring a decent 79 goals, most coming from the bench.
Ameobi came through the ranks in Tyneside and made his debut 9th of September 2000 in a home game against Chelsea, coming off the bench for toon legend Alan Shearer.
The nine times capped Nigerian international also appeared in the Champions league in 2002, scoring at the Nou Camp on December the 17th 2002.
"We want to establish an ambitious team in the league this season," said a statement on the Gaziantep website.
"We have therefore tied Shola Ameobi from one of the strongest teams in England to us for one year."
