Liverpool transfer activity round up
After the heartbreak of their late slip up (sorry Gerrard, excuse the pun) in the league last season, Brendan Rodgers will be determined to spend their increased transfer budget wisely, to bring in some extra depth into the team that occasionally last season looked very shaky at the back. Liverpool at times were breathtaking going forward, their attacking prowess heavily featured Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, but with the latter moving to Barcelona, will Liverpool still have that cutting edge that they did last term?
Noted signings
With the departure of Suarez for £75 million, it was always likely that Liverpool would sign a decent striker. This being Southampton’s Rickie Lambert. As most Liverpool fans understand, this signing is not a like for like swap for Suarez, both are very different players. Lambert is not blessed with the finesse and pace of Suarez, Lambert is much more of a physical presence than the Uruguayan, however, it isn’t all just brawn and no brains, Lambert is a very clever player and excellent at brining players with more pace and flair into space. A few Liverpool fans are yet to be convinced that the signing of Lambert is the player Liverpool are looking for to win the league.
Liverpool again raided Southampton for the attacking midfielder Adam Lallana. For many season’s Lallana has performed consistently brilliant at St Mary’s and been a fans favourite. However, it was only last season that the Southampton, oppositions and pundits really starting noticing this five foot eight midfielder, with an immaculate quiff. Lallana should add something different to the Liverpool squad and unlike Lambert, I think he could make an immediate impact.
On the 5th of June 2014, Rodgers signed Bayern Leverkusen’s Emre Can. The powerful midfielder spent only one year at Leverkusen and despite only making 29 appearances, Brendan Rogers admired his direct and decisive play from midfield.
Part of Rogers mass buying spree, Liverpool have also captured the signature of Benfica’s Lazar Markovic. The Yugoslavian born Markovic is a technically gifted wide midfielder. Many have compared his performances to the Argentinean great Lionel Messi. With his excellent close control and eye for a pass, I believe Markovic will be an excellent signing for Liverpool once he has settled in.
Much to Southampton’s frustration, on the 27th of July, Liverpool signed a third Southampton player in four weeks, the player being Dejan Lovren. Lovren is a solid defender who is brilliant at pushing attackers off the ball in a legal way. The centre back also likes to carry the ball out from the heart of defence, a trait needed by many modern day defenders.
On the 10th of July, Liverpool announced the signing of Belgium international Divock Origi. Orgigi from Lille has been sent back out on loan to the French club, with the hope of the striker gaining more game time and experience in time for his return to England in the 2015-16 campaign.
Rumoured signings
Liverpool look set to sign Sevilla’s fullback Albert Moreno for £11 million. Moreno will provide an extra dimension when going forward. The left back loves nothing more than overlapping his own left winger and delivering a deadly cross. With Markovic joining, Liverpool can possibly have the most dangerous left flank in the league.
Players they could do with?
With no disrespect to Rickie Lampert, he is not as dangerous to the opposition as Luis Suarez. I feel that this seasons Liverpool squad is incredibly strong. If they really want to go one step further this season, they should sign a better striker than Lambert, somebody who can change a game like Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, who has already been linked with a move to Anfield.
This criticism of Lambert is admittedly very picky from me. I feel that Liverpool are reasonably strong in all areas, even defensively, after their occasional costly defensive slip ups. If Liverpool can sign a striker (which I doubt they will now) that can link up well with Sturridge and score a healthy amount of goals, I think Liverpool have a very good chance of winning the title this season.
