Luke Johnston player review
Name: Luke Johnston.
Position: Right back/Centre back.
Age: 20
He’s the new? : Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea)
This season has seen many gifted youngsters from the prestigious Dundee United youth academy step up and become first team regulars. These players include the impressive midfielder Ryan Gauld, composed centre back John Souttar and most recently Scott Smith. There seem to be many more in the production line such as Scottish Under 16’s forward Ali Coote, John Souttar's little big brother Harry Souttar at 6”2 aged just 15 and still growing. However there are a few emerging talents that have been out on loan throughout this campaign, One of them being defender Luke Johnston.
Luke is currently out of the game after excessive training has led him to a hip injury, he is hoping to be back training and playing by the end of next season.
Luke was born in Kircaldy the place where former Hearts and Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Colin Cameron was born. Luke first joined Woodside boys club in Fife’s Glenrothes in which he played as a midfielder. After impressing at Boys club level, Luke joined his childhood team Rangers FC and trained with the Under 11’s and 12’s for 2 years. Luke then left Rangers to join nearby Fife club Raith Rovers and played with their youth side for 3 years before moving to Australia in 2008 playing for A-League side Perth Glory in their youth ranks. Luke stayed in Australia for 3 years before moving back to Scotland in November 2012 and signing a short term contract for Scottish Premiership side Dundee United.
After performing well in games in the Scottish Under 19’s league he was awarded a two year contract with the Tangerines. On Friday the 26th of April 2013, he was brought on for his first professional match against Ross County and started the next week against St Johnstone and played till 67 minutes before coming off for current Derby striker Johnny Russell who was returning from injury. Luke said “The Ross County game was the best day of my life. I was so excited I nearly went onto the pitch with my trackies on. The home match against St Johnstone was amazing and was the best feeling I've ever had and I thought I done pretty well. Jackie (McNamara) told me he should have kept me on instead of subbing me. ”
Luke can play in a variety of positions, Centre back, Centre midfield and most recently has been playing at right back where he made his Dundee United first team appearances. Watching Luke play it's obvious he likes to play football the right way and looks to bring pace and tempo when called upon.
In total Luke has made 12 appearances in the 2013-2014 season on loan for Dunfermline, scoring a well taken goal against Stranraer. On the 13th of December he signed for Scottish League 2 side Montrose on a loan deal, managing 6 appearances before his hip injury ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
