Manchester City transfer activity
After narrowly winning the title last season, most would come to the conclusion that Manuel Pellegrini would try and strengthen their good, but not amazing squad. However, unlike other previous transfer windows, this season City have sold and released more players than they have bought.
Noted transfers
So far in the transfer window, City have only permanently signed four players. The first being French right back Bacary Sagna. After seven years at Arsenal, Sagna revealed that he was interested in a move away from the Emirates for a new adventure and to compete for trophies. With Pablo Zabaleta’s brilliant season last year at the Etihad, Sagna will be hoping to push for Zabaleta’s place as City’s first choice right back.
Just yesterday, the Manchester club announced the signing of 21 year old midfielder Bruno Zuculini. After four years at the Argentinean team Racing Club, Zuculini comes to the Etihad with the hope of displaying the same direct and attacking play from the right flank.
Also signed up is the 32 year old goalkeeper Willy Caballero. The 6’1 goalkeeper performed brilliantly for Malaga in his three year stint in the La Liga and City will be hoping he provides some real competition for Joe Hart.
On the 26th of June, City announced the signing of the Brazilian midfielder Fernando. The midfielder signs from Porto and will add some steel when sitting in front of the very impressive back four.
Also signed is New York City’s Frank Lampard, who is on loan until March 2015. Lampard will provide extra depth in the midfield and the England midfielder isn’t shy in front of goal either.
Rumoured signings
Manchester City have revealed that they remain confident of capturing the signature of defender Elaquim Mangala from Porto for a reported £23million.
In the January transfer window, City were seemingly very close to signing the 23 year old Frenchman, however, both clubs failed to agree on a fee. City’s interest in the player has continued since the start of the summer and it is believed that Porto have accepted a fee in the region of £23million.
On the Manchester City website last month appeared an image of Mangala going through his City medical with the text underneath displaying, “City’s latest signing.” The club later declared that the system had been hacked and the image was not intended on being released.
Despite almost a month later, Managala is still a Porto player, although City still remain optimistic about signing the player, they have vented their frustration in the delay which relates to Mangala’s third-party ownership.
If the expected deal goes through, Mangala will be City’s fourth summer signing, and second from Porto, after the Brazilian midfielder Fernando joined for around £12million.
Mangala began his career at Standard Liege in 2008, winning the title in his first season. In 2011 he then signed for Portugese giants Porto, where he made 52 first team appearances and scored 6 goals, a fairly decent scoring return for a defender.
Should the likely transfer go through, City will have gained a tight marking, hard working defender who has the ability to dribble from deep.
Who they could do with
I think that City are still lacking a brilliant back up striker for Sergio Aguero. The little Argentinean is brilliant when he is fully fit and sharp; however, Aguero in the space of a season can miss about ten games. Once the striker returns to the squad, it usually takes him a good few games to get back into the form that makes him one of the deadliest strikers in the Premier League. In my opinion, I don’t believe that Edin Dzeko is a good enough replacement for Aguero when injured or coming off the bench. Sure, Dzeko chips in with an impressive tally of goals in a season, however, City lack the imagination and cutting edge play when Dzeko is in the squad.
