This morning Southampton announced they had agreed a reported £12m fee for Hull City and Republic of Ireland striker Shane Long.
27 year old long had only been at the KC stadium since his January signing from West Brom. In his time with the Tigers he made fifteen appearances and scored four goals.
Long originally began his career in the League of Ireland with his hometown Cork City where he made his debut as a 19 year old, before becoming a Premier League household name with Steve Coppell’s Reading.
Long is set to become Saint’s sixth summer signing along with Celtic goalie Fraser Forster defender Ryan Bertrand, midfielders Dusan Tadic and Saphir Taider and striker Graziano Pelle, as they look to rebuild from the mass exodus of influential players departing after a successful 2013-14 campaign.
Although Long failed to make an impression with Hull, if he can find the form from he displayed in the black and white strip of West Brom, Southampton could have a decent player to place the physicality of Rickie Lambert.
