Scotland squad announced for meeting in Germany with a few surprising decisions
Gordon Strachan has surprisingly called up Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor to the Scotland squad for Scotland’s opening Euro 2016 qualifier in Germany.
21 year old McGregor has impressed at Celtic since earning his first run of games under the new boss Ronny Deila.
Last season McGregor was on loan to English league one side Notts County where he featured 36 times and scored 12 goals. So far this season McGregor has played in all but one of Celtic’s fixtures scoring three goals in Europe and one domestic.
Strachan has also announced a return for Celtic goalie Craig Gordon. The keeper with 40 international caps to his name will have Allan McGregor and Matt Gilks breathing down his neck for the Scottish number one jersey.
Only three strikers have been named for the squad- Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher, Everton’s Steven Naismith and Derby’s Chris Martin. Surprisingly leaving out goal scoring machine Jordan Rhodes and Sheffield Wednesday’s new signing Stevie May who will have to settle for a place in the Under 21’s squad.
Hull’s dangerous left back Andrew Robertson will again look to link up well with Ikechi Anya on the left after another call up thanks to some confident performances against Nigeria at Craven Cottage and impressing early on in his career at the KC stadium.
Only 3 of the 26 announced by Strachan play their football in the Scottish Premiership, all being from champions Celtic.
Scotland will be hoping that on the 7th of November they will be able to overcome the World Cup champions in their own backyard.
