Despite holding a bad boy reputation to many already, there is no doubt that Partick Thistle’s young defensive midfield has all the tools to be a top player.
Fraser began his career at the Celtic Youth Academy where he developed from the age of 13-16 as a right sided defender.
After being released from the Glasgow giants, Fraser moved to Hamilton Academical, a club with a good reputation of bringing through youngsters, an example being, James McCarthy and James McCarthur who both developed from the Hamilton academy to the English Premier League.
Aged just 17 and one month old, Fraser made his Hamilton debut coming on as a right back against Livingstone in the Scottish First Division. Even though the Glasgow born teenager played only 17 minutes, Accies fans were impressed with Fraser’s commitment in both defence and attack.
After making only 15 appearances in Billy Reid’s mid table Hamilton side, Fraser was released by the club in May 2013, with the player seemingly interested in tackling the English Championship with Bolton Wanderers.
Just 12 days after signing for the Lancashire club, it was announced that Fraser would return to Scotland, this time in a six month loan deal with the newly promoted Scottish Premiership club Partick Thistle.
In October 2013, after four reasonably impressive displays for the Partick Thistle first team, Fraser was given a nine match suspension for punching and kicking an opposing player. The assault came in an Under 20 fixture against Dunfermline at Firhill stadium. After a nasty collision with an opponent, Fraser lost his temper as he repeatedly punched and kicked the opponent in the head.
Despite this brutal attack, the Dunfermline managed John Potter said,
“It was an ugly collision. Gary lost the plot for a few seconds but it’s ridiculous to suggest it is worthy of a one-year ban.”
After reviewing the situation the Scottish Football Association decided to give the youngster just a nine match ban, instead of the 12 that many had suggested. However, Bolton decided to release the youngster just five days after the ban. The youngster chose to commit to Thistle, in hope of positive improvement
Since Fraser’s lengthy ban, he has grown into a fantastic player, proving a very important part in the Thistle midfield. Despite playing as a fullback for most of his youth career, playing as a defensive midfield for the Maryhill team has benefited both the club and the player, with Fraser’s pinpoint passing and eye for goal working a treat slightly further up the pitch.
Suggested by many Thistle fans as having a similar style to Steven Gerrard, Fraser has many characteristics that the Scouse leader also has. Fraser controls the game brilliantly from the midfield and also has a fantastic range of passing. As well as having these vital midfield traits, The Glaswegian has a thunderous strike as Hearts goalkeeper Jamie McDonald and Dundee’s Kyle Letheren will know all about after Fraser’s sensational strikes.
If Fraser continuous to effectively dictate the midfield for Thistle as he has been doing so, he will most certainly attract attention from bigger clubs South of the border. Should he continue to improve as he has been doing each week, there is no reason why the midfielder cannot earn a Scotland call-up.
